A month ago my two year old, out of warranty, Compaq Presario laptop display abruptly died here lakeside. I knew laptop repairs are costly often exceeding the value of the computer.
I spent hours online (using a friends computer) searching for options. Sending the laptop to Compaq was a $500 usd repair and shipping bill and months of waiting if I was lucky.
I almost bought a used screen on Ebay for $300 usd plus shipping, no guarantees, weeks or months of waiting, and, I'd have to find a way to get it installed.
Carlos Gonzalez Villegas of "Vicar Laptops" in Guadalajara, repaired my screen/laptop today, while I waited, in thirty minutes, and with the gift of gab, in English. To my amazement, the total charge for parts and labor was 500 pesos out the door, with a 90 day (verbal) warranty with receipt.
Carlos has new and used laptops and parts and even does board level soldering repairs. He and partner, David, are located in the Computer Mall, as I call it, or Plaza de la Computacion, downtown, at 16 Septembre and Lopez Cotilla 328.
His booths are on the second floor, #30, in the back. His office phone is 3614-7090. Avoid weekends, Tuesdays are best for service while you wait. Calling ahead is recommended. His email is
vicar.computadoras@gmail.com.
Also, if you want competitive Mexico prices for any computer related item or repair, consider the Computer Mall. With 100 little stalls or booths in the five story building, it may be worth a walk-though just to see it all. Avoid weekends, it's way too crowded. - Steve
I found this on the Chapala message board ... and am going to leave it here as a sticky. I'm working on a laptop now and know a few others that have them ... and would hate to just scrap it due to no repair people around.
