I was wondering if someone could please tell me if I have to haul my travel trailer back to the border every 6 months?
Is there a way to avoid this?

We have noticed that people in PaaMul have travel trailers that look permanent with palapas built over the top.

Not an expert on this at all .... but have heard that trailers and cars are registered more or less as a unit. And you have to take the unit back.

Then if you are on an FM3 ... you don't need to cross the border at all

RV'ers can get a new permit that is good for 10 years. I believe that this went into effect last year.

Probably a RV'er can help you more.

I found this post that might also help you.

-----------------------------------

I found this very interesting article in http://rollinghomes.com/Madds3.htm

December 5, 2005 Update - We received a pleasant shock when we crossed the border at Nogales on November 30. Motorhomes were being issued 10 year vehicle permits. The cost was 530.64 pesos or about $50.50 US. The girl at the Banjercito said that new rules went into effect three days before. This apparently does not affect pickups since we (in a pickup camper) could only get the normal 6-month permit for a price of 318.38 pesos or about $30.30 US. We'll have to see what they do with fifth-wheels. Let us know. Also, we were told that as part of the new rules one driver can now bring in two motor vehicles. That means single RV motorhome drivers can now bring in a tow vehicle. This is all new and seems almost too good to be true, let us know what happens when you come in. Send us an email using the link at the left or to rollinghomes@pocketmail.com.

-----------------------------------

Another

-------------------------

When you arrive @ km 21 you simply ask for a 10 year permit. This is NOT part of your car permit. The purpose of this permit is to allow you to leave your trailer in Mexico for 10 years. When this program started it was for 15 years! Boats are also eligible for the same permit.

---------------------

Maybe that will help you. I suggest that you also post on Thorntree the questions and I bet you get more answers there.

Thanks again Shoe! That was most informative. :)

I am not familiar with Thorntree, but it seems I have already asked my allotment of questions.

10 YEAR RV PERMITS:

Something introduced in December, 2005 is the 10 year RV permit. To qualify for this permit, your RV must have an intergal motor. This means that Class A, B, and C RV's only can get one of these. Truck campers, travel trailers, and 5th wheelers don't qualify. As stated, these are good for 10 years and, for the qualified RV, this is the only thing offered. The 6 month Temporary Vehicle Permit is no longer available for these RV's. If you sell or trade your RV you must scrape the holograph off and return the certificate to the Banjercito. If you traded it in, or need to replace the windshield, you will be issued a new hologram and certificate. You can either take the hologram pieces and your paperwork with you on the next trip or contact the local consulate.
