Well I do not have a Mexican favorite tune ... it is difficult enough for me to "correctly hear" Spanish when it is spoken ... the songs are another syntax nightmare ! :!:

I am, however, going to find the tabs and lyrics to Juana la Cubana and practice until I get everything "just right".

THEN, I'll do my best to 'arrange' it as a Blue Grass rendition. Somehow this feels like a large bite (would that be mordisco?) ... and chewey. 8)

So far no words ... no music ... yet.

Here is a link to the Radio Station that claims Juana a Cubana as it's "theme" .... turns out the tune is a Samba ... this could be a real chore.

8) Hi, I'm involved in folk and bluegrass music here in Washington State. The town of Darrington was populated with "tar heels", loggers from North Carolina who brought blugrass to WA, the first festival in 1970 or before. We have many more in the Pacific NW since then.

When I come to Melaque, however, I prefer to leave the Martin at home and bring my classic style guitar (I got a good one in Paracho last year) and do Mexican and other tropical type music.

I have struggled to learn the spanish lyrics for a few mexican tunes, and have many more as instrumentals, along with a few hawaiian, bossa nova, calypso, parrothead, old county and folk tunes. I like to do background for music for parties and at restaurants, particularly at Roosters, and have also played at Bananarama and (in the afternoon) atAva's.

Bananarama has been a great place to meet folk musicians, including Fred from Calgary, but I don't know if Dave's new place will be the same in this respect. Fred stayed at Hotel Bahia last year, and another Fred from BC brought a dobro, so we had some jams on the veranda.

My brother Dave plays autoharp; he has a rich voice and an encyclopedic memory for old country and bluegrass tunes. I back him up on guitar when we are there together.

So, we see from this thread that more people would like to get together for jammin. How about getting together?

I'm arriving Feb 14th and staying a month, just in time to show up at the tomzap party. See ya there?

Dan

Foto looks like the old Roosters (they've moved) and I don't know what Bananarama is going to turn out to be (he moved and will move again)

I think the problem with vacation oriented message boards .... is many of the people posting aren't here. They are either dreaming or will be down next month for a few weeks.

It would be cool to get a friendly core of long term people ... that folks passing thru could sit in with. I'm sure I'll run into a few after being here awhile.

Wow ... you play at Roosters for breakfast/lunch. A little early for me.

We'll be there around the 22nd. of Feb...I'm bringing my guitar. I sang with bands (mostly country) for years and then did a guitar single. What I really miss is doing harmony. See you there! 8)

 You have me curious. I haven't heard the song, but I may be able to hear it by following _jc2's link to the radio station.

In the meantime, I found the lyrics and made translations. I was afraid it was going to be, shall we say, extremely risque, or worse, but no, it's just a good sexy dance tune!

Here are two slightly different versions followed by my translations (with a little help from Bable Fish):

Juana La Cubana
(Las Chicas del Can)

Aqui Juana La Cubana - Baile como Juana La Cubana
Las Chicas Del Can

-Rico*
-Dejen espacio - Dejen espacio - Ahí - Eso (solo)

Haganle una rueda a Juana, etc.
a como Juana la Cubana

JUANA LA CUBANA (Juana the Cuban) version 1
(the Girls of Can)

Here's Juana la cubana - Dance like Juana la cubana
the Girls Of Can
Make a circle around Juana, around Juana

Make a circle around Juana, because she starts to dance
That cuban colored person, we are going to do it until we sweat
I dance that rhythm that is pure pleasure
Negro, I move, because that is pure fire and heat
Because, dancing, I am queen of where she wants
It inspires me to move my hips. (solo)

*DANCE LIKE JUANA LA CUBANA
-The rhythm that feels, flavorful like an apple juice
-One step forward and one step back, but with desire
-To follow the rhythm you must move like me
-Seeing how I dance, you have to until the six in the morning
-Dance like Juana la cubana. ¡Si señor! (solo)

From here to there, there to here
DANCE LIKE JUANA LA CUBANA
One foot forward, one foot back
A little forward, a little back
Rich(??)
Make space - make space - There - That (solo)
Make a circle around Juana, etc.
Just like Juana la Cubana

JUANA LA CUBANA (Juana the Cuban) version 2
(the Girls of Can)

Here is Juana la cubana...
Dance like Juana la cubana...
The Girls of Can...
Make a circle around Juana. around Juana...

1) Make a circle around Juana because she already starts to dance,
that Cuban colored person is going to sweat

She dances this rhythm that is the pure pleasure
full of New Year [ black, I move](2x only)
because she made pure fire and heat
because, dancing, I am queen
where she wants
It inspires me to move my hips.

Dance like Juana la cubana
the rhythm that feels,
flavorful as an apple juice
Dance like Juana la Cubana
One step forward
and one step back, but with desire
Dance like Juana la cubana
to follow the rhythm you must move yourself just as I
Dance like Juana la cubana
seeing as I dance
you must do it until 6 in the morning.
¡Si señor!

Thanks DanE ...

The song is 'Terrific' ... your time spent copying this is greatly appreciated. It would be such fun to have some jammin' sessions. Sounds like the musical experiences put us squarely in the 'ecclectic' category.

I (infrequently) play with a couple of groups and although I like the Dave Mathews, Joe Jackson gendre (that my son plays) ... I just try to hang on to the basic meat of the music. When I do the C/W type of songs or the early rock ... I'm a little more comfortable. I have tried and tried to get the flat-pick style (of Mountain Music) to be more natural but it continues to be a labor, one of the negative after-effects of working to become a three finger picker.

Anyway thanks very much for the Juana La Cubana song ... it looks fun! :D

jct2 -

I was browsing this thread just now and thought I'd pass this on.

As a fingerstyle player who wants to learn more about flat pickin', sometime when you have a few minutes go to limewire.com and download the Leo Kottke/Doc Watson version of "The Last Steam Engine Train" - look for the live version from the Prairie Home Companion radio show. Absolutely remarkable that those two could just sit there and play that without one missed note. Doc Watson, as I'm sure you know, is the king of the bluegrass flat pickers, and nobody plays fingerstyle on steel strings better than Kottke, IMO.

And while I'm thinking about it, if you're in the Pacific Northwest, check out a CD called "Resting Place" by a guy from Portland named Terry Robb. Another terrific accoustic fingerstyle player, very well-known in PDX.

Oh - and somebody tell Pedro that John Lee Hooker did not play a Telecaster, he played an old Les Paul-style Epiphone (made by Gibson as a more affordable version of the Gibson Les Paul).

Hi, Pedro -

Yes, I've seen John Lee up close a couple of times myself, most recently about 2 months before he passed away, which I guess by now must have been at least a couple of years ago. He was a true classic. I guess I misunderstood you when you said that you play a Tele like Hooker.

I don't have a Tele but have always wanted one. I do have a pretty nice Stratocaster and used to have a Gibson Les Paul that, like a fool, I sold a few years ago. I'd like to get another one one of these days, but damn, those things are expensive. Nowadays I fool around mostly with a Gibson accoustic.

Don't know if I got to say so the other day, but I enjoyed meeting you and shooting the breeze with you & Ron Langley at Tom's.

Take care on that Beezer,
GA
