Just got back from 3 weeks in Seattle and found a dead computer when I returned (loud POP when I turned it on). I assumed and hoped it was just the power supply but you never know and you don´t know if repair people will play games with you.

Anyway I really recommend this guy for being professional, nice and has pretty good English skills. A power supply (properly checked), cleaned computer with compressed air, 1 year warranty on parts .... and did it while I was waiting (25 mins). $395 pesos

Sistemas Computacionales
Benito Juarez 24
San Patricio
(a block east of the plaza across from Pizza place)

Be it sotb or here in smoky and hot Idaho ... finding a good computer support professional is a special experience.

Good luck to the new enterprise!

Definitely agree. This is my first computer problem here except when the laptop was stolen and there´s not much a repair person can do for that.

In the last 20 years computer repair has become just parts swapping but I don't have any parts to swap. I used to maintain over 300 PC's on our campus and had tons of extra parts.

A loud POP is usually a good sized capacitor and you'll only find them in a power supply on modern PC´s

Up north this would have taken 2 days and cost close to $100.

In "the old days" ... I'd do most of the hardware fixes and all the software stuff ... BUT ... like the automobiles for the past 2 dozens years that have been "computerized" ... today's PCs are so much more "loaded".

I mean a HD is a HD is a HD ... BUT ... it just feels more convoluted and files after files after files. Plus all that gets a piece of the CPU's time is just amazing. I cut down on everything I can and I still am running 36 processes just doing what I'm doing now.

Whatever happened to Alt F3 for reveal codes and where oh where have the "huge" 40 Mb Megalopolis monsters? Am I sharing my age too much?

I do like what the technology evolution offers us ... I just am amazed at how fast the change circle is going.

Scott ... maybe we could come back from retirement, start a PC repair business ... "Old Farts Fix'ems" ... we could take care of all the 286s and 386s ... I wonder if anyone even knows of that stuff.

My last "good sized" application was built on the .Net framework (2003 timeframe) and I recall thinking, "how many times do I have to be on the learning curve, to get things done"? Nobody wants old, tired technology; or for that matter old tired/retired PC repair guys.

Have a good day Scott.

Or how about someone who still can operate using DOS?

Aside from a Timex/Sinclair which was my first "Computer" using a cassete drive for programs and a B/W TV. Then you spent 20 minutes waiting for a program to load, sometimes it actually did. Then an ATARI XL 130 using a Commodore monitor, better than ATARI's. A Commodore 64 was too expensive.

Then my first "real" computer had a 25Mhz CPU and I installed a DOUBLER to bump it up to a blazing 50Mhz, 4 MB Ram, a 270MB HDD, Windows 3.1 and a single speed CD-Rom. Bought an 8 MB memory chip for more than I can buy a whole computer now.

Spent hours trying to configure a 14.4 modem. No Plug n' pray in those days.

Ah, the good ole days.

My desktop is running VISTA and by the time a couple of programs were added it takes up about 10 GB of HDD space.

Where is that time machine ???

It is fun to chat about the times gone by ... if we could have known then what we know now ... think of the 'smart' investments we could have made.

The first time I saw the 'internet' was in the early 90's at Micron technology when an engineer fella (who ran a Mac desktop) ran a unix connect to some system back at Texas Instruments to swap some papers with another cohert. I said, 'so big deal, this is just like dial up modem stuff'. I obviously didn't 'see' the future. A few years later (circa 95?) I remember when Netscape went IPO ... from rags to riches.

How 'bou the two youngsters who cranked up YouTube ... just for fun ... and NOW for HUGE profits.

Interesting 'thing' this IT --> Ogre.

Tech support, the lighter side. (For some anyway)

Tech support: What kind of computer do you have?
Female customer: A white one...

===============

Customer: Hi, this is Celine. I can't get my diskette out.
Tech support: Have you tried pushing the Button?
Customer: Yes, sure, it's really stuck.
Tech support: That doesn't sound good; I'll make a note.
Customer: No , wait a minute... I hadn't inserted it yet... it's still on my desk... sorry....

===============

Tech support: Click on the 'my computer' icon on to the left of the screen.
Customer: Your left or my left?

===============

Tech support: Good day. How may I help you?
Male customer: Hello... I can't print.
Tech support: Would you click on "start" for me and...
Customer: Listen pal; don't start getting technical on me! I'm not Bill Gates.

===============

Customer: Hi, good afternoon, this is Martha, I can't print.
Every time I try, it says 'Can't find printer'. I've even lifted
the printer and placed it in front of the monitor,
but the computer still says he can't find it...

===============

Customer: I have problems printing in red...
Tech support: Do you have a color printer?
Customer: Aaaah....................thank you.

===============

Tech support: What's on your monitor now, ma'am?
Customer: A teddy bear my boyfriend bought for me at the 7-11.

===============

Customer: My keyboard is not working anymore.
Tech support: Are you sure it's plugged into the computer?
Customer: No. I can't get behind the computer.
Tech support: Pick up your keyboard and walk 10 paces back.
Customer: OK
Tech support: Did the keyboard come with you?
Customer: Yes
Tech support: That means the keyboard is not plugged in. Is there another keyboard?
Customer: Yes, there's another one here. Ah...that one does work...

===============

Tech support: Your password is the small letter "a" as in apple,
a capital letter "V" as In Victor, the number "7."
Customer: Is that "7" in capital letters?

===============

Customer: can't get on the Internet.
Tech support: Are you sure you used the right password?
Customer: Yes, I'm sure. I saw my colleague do it.
Tech support: Can you tell me what the password was?
Customer: Five stars..

===============

Tech support: What anti-virus program do you use?
Customer: Netscape.
Tech support: That's not an anti-virus program.
Customer: Oh, sorry...Internet Explorer.

===============

Customer: I have a huge problem. A friend has placed a screen saver
on my computer but every time I move the mouse, it disappears.

===============

Tech support: How may I help you?
Customer: I'm writing my first e-mail.
Tech support: OK, and what seems to be the problem?
Customer: Well, I have the letter 'a' in the address, but how do I get the circle around it?

===============

A woman customer called the Canon help desk with a problem with her printer.
Tech support: Are you running it under windows?
Customer: No, my desk is next to the door, but that is a good point.
The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window,
and his printer is working fine.

===============

Tech support: Okay Bob, let's press the control and escape keys at the same time.
That brings up a task list in the middle of the screen.
Now type the letter "P" to bring up the Program Manager.
Customer: I don't have a P.
Tech support: On your keyboard, Bob.
Customer: What do you mean?
Tech support: "P".....on your keyboard, Bob.
Customer: I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT!!!!!!

Good stuff this IT support line. When I was in the classroom as a teacher ... sometimes getting a question understood or a concept digested was a challenge ... BUT ... phone support is out there in another galaxy ... very very difficult.

Thanks for the laughs rgm

Have you ever wondered about Tech support?

Mujibar was trying to get a job in India.

The Personnel Manager said, "Mujibar, you have
passed all the tests, except one. Unless you pass
it you cannot qualify for this job."

Mujibar said, "I ready"

The manager said, "Make a sentence using the
words Yellow, Pink and Green."

Mujibar thought for a few minutes and said,
"Mister manager, I ready"

The manager said, "Go ahead."

Mujibar said, "The telephone goes green, green,
and I pink it up, and say, 'Yellow, this is Mujibar'"

Mujibar now works as a technician at a call
center for computer problems.

No doubt you have spoken to him. I have.

I'm pretty sure I talked with Mujibar ... BUT ... I think he told me his name was Elvis ... El-bus ... El-boos ... L-booz ... it was very hard to get my ear to pick up on his enunciation ... he wasn't very good either ... knew nothing about my 286 and DOS 3.11
