Part of Mari's house is covered with lamina (corrugated asbestos) and there are small holes where the hold down hooks go thru (maybe a few cracks as well). With all the rain we had last night the water got thru.

Anyone suggest a gooey sealer to use - possibly trowel it on rather than paint it

Buy it by the kilo at any ferreteria. Heat it up and apply to the cracks and bolt holes. It will flex with the lamina.

The closest I can imagine from up north is a 'hot tar' roof which luckily I never got involved in ... and is difficult and dangerous work.

Even a scaled down version of that sounds complicated (heating) ... so think we'll try tubes of silicone which usually does not do well in the sun. there might even be tubes of TAR or something in a can ... but without a HomeDepot who knows

The stuff comes in rock solid form. Get an old metal bucket and just heat a little in the bottom at a time. Tie a rag on the end of a stick and swab the stuff on the bolt heads. It isn't very dangerous or difficult.

An alternative is heating it with a small propane torch. Place a small piece on the bolt and zap it with the flame.

The stuff will last for a long time. You start using silicone caulk by next summer you'll be doing it again and it doesn't work half the time.

I guess we could heat it on a stove in small amounts

Sounds like the same stuff used up north. Came paper wrapped about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. Your cooker was towed on a trailer. Getting 5 gallon buckets of this hot stuff up to a flat roof so it could be applied with a mop was what was dangerous

There used to be something in a can that you could scoop out and trowel on. Might have been named 'black majic' or similar. Silicone works for awhile but direct sun and expansion eats it up. I'm not sure a couple of tubes would be enough and the best quality is expensive. We'll probably try tar

I put on a metal roof in September of 06 ... I gooped on some stuff around all the pipes and vents that are on the roof. I used the flat board/paddle applicator and slopped on some black goo from a large plastic bucket. Bought this stuff at Home Depot. This stuff was like semi-runny tar.

Don't remember the product name but if you can't figure it out let me know and I'll run out to the barn and dig around to see if I kept the container ... to get the name.

Scott ...

Here is a website for the stuff I found for sealing my roof. http://www.amesresearch.com/roof_coatings.htm

Take a gander and see if it looks like it'll work.

Joe

I remember the Henry brand and they made some pretty good stuff. Will keep and eye out

_jct2 ... I replied yesterday but computer burped and it never got posted. Something like - was that an offer to bring down a can

Hasn't been raining lately and the family concerned about this seems to think day-to-day. I'll wait for some more input.

Scott ...

I stopped by Home Depot to pickup some tarps for my alfalfa stacks and ran down to the Building Materials section to see what is available regarding roof repair and found products by the Henry Company on the shelf. I noticed earlier that dgremark has offered the same info.

http://www.henry.com/index.php?id=143

I don't think that the Henry products were on the shelf last year when I needed them but they are now.

So my dowry is light ... I am a "day late and a 'Henry' dollar short".

Good luck with the patch work.
