My wife and I were lucky enough to buy a little house in Santiago. We will make our move in bits and pieces as we both still work. One thing I am trying to get some info on is Internet service. How long is the contract? Can we do short term contracts? What are the cost? What is the quality like from the providers and who are they? How long does it take to get service to your house? Is there anything else I should know?

The only possible option to Telmex DSL would be a cable company which a lot of larger cities have. Not in Melaque so I wouldn't know.

We got our Telmex phone and DSL here within a week but it seems to differ from city to city or region to region. We had to go to Manzanillo to start the account.

Disconnect fees are horrible as well as start up. Might pay to use Internet cafes 'till your in the area longer. Basic phone is about $22-25 and $35-40 for DSL

Can we get stand alone high speed internet without having to sign up for a phone or TV cable in Manzanillo?

Seriously doubt it. With Telmex, first comes the phone and then added services

I can't tell you much about the cable option because there is no cable in my neighborhood. However there is a cable company in Manzanillo, Telecable, and according to the website you can get internet through it. However you also get cable TV.

I used MegaCable in San Carlos and it worked very well and was about $55 a month for internet and 62 television channels.

Since I can't get cable I am using Telmex and my monthly bill is about $45 for telephone line & DSL internet. That does not include any long distance charges as I use Skype for most calls.

If you haven't done it yet and you are still in the states and use Skype, buy one of the Skype phones. They are great. I have the Netgear SPH200D and it works just like a telephone. The landline rings on it and Skype calls ring on it. No messing around with the headset. When you call out you choose which line you want it to use. Just add an answering machine unless you use Telmex voice mail.

Good Luck,
Stan in Santiago

It looks, judging by the number of views, that interest service is of interest to a fair number. The responses to my request for help have been helpful. Thank you. I hope down the road we all have more options for internet service.

There is a new internet service available in some parts of Mexico. Ego. Rogers in Canada offers a similar system. Rogers call it Portable Internet. http://www.rogers.com/web/content/internet-portable
My understanding is ego will offer the services without you having to tie into a contract. Pay as go you system. Ego would be perfect for those of us that are not in Mexico all year or without a land line or cable.

Has anyone heard if they will be servicing communities like Manzanillo in the near future?
