Volunteers needed! Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Sept. 20, 2008
10th ANNUAL "SPLASH FOR TRASH!"
Manzanillo: La Boquita (beach & ocean), Juluapan Lagoon, Road to Vida del Mar,
Road around Juluapan Lagoon, La Boquita side
Last year, 378,000 people in 76 countries collected 6 million pounds of trash. Marine trash kills more than one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles each year through ingestion and entanglement, says the Ocean Conservancy. This year, volunteers found 81 birds, 63 fish, 49 invertebrates, 30 mammals, 11 reptiles, and one amphibian entangled in debris such as plastic bags, fishing lines, fishing nets, six-pack holders, balloon and kite strings, glass bottles, and cans.
Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. Thousands of volunteers participate from all over the globe, clearing tons of trash from oceans and waterways, and recording every piece of trash collected. Worldwide, volunteers removed an average of 16 pounds of trash, per person.
Ocean Conservancy is looking forward to its next International Coastal Cleanup on September 20, 2008! To do more now, support Ocean Conservancy and join the thousands that are protecting ocean wildlife from marine debris.
In Manzanillo, the clean-up will be divided into 5 territories. Carlos Cuellar will be heading up the scuba diving division, and Stefan Dyck will be heading up the lagoon clean-up by kayak and boat. Captains are still needed for the beach area from La Boquita to Margarita's Restaurant, the road to Vida del Mar, and the dirt road around the Juluapan Lagoon. Trash will be collected, sorted, and weighed, and a report will be filed with the Ocean Conservancy. Volunteers may contact Susan Dearing or Carlos Cuellar of Scuba Shack, 333-3678. Divers will receive all equipment and tanks free, compliments of Scuba Shack. For a feature article on past year's event, go to
